    Historical Facts

    • Aurangabad has a glorious history and holds the distinction of being a part of one of the largest and strongest empires in ancient India – Magadha. The region of Magadha was home to a vast empire during the ancient times, dating from 600 to 250 BC. It was also ruled by Bimbisar and Ajatshatru. Later on, Chandragupta Maurya and Ashoka ruled the region. Later, Rajputs came here to settle down. All these rulers have left their mark on the city.The city prospered immensely during the reign of King Ashoka.
    • The Magadhas, King Ashoka, Bimbisar, Ajatshatru, the Rajputs, Bhairvendra Singh and the British are the rulers who ruled the kingdom. The city gained prominence after several centuries during the British rule in India; when the Britishers created the sub-division of Aurangabad in the year 1865.
    • The small village Deokund is associated with an interesting mythological relevance. According to Hindu mythology, once Lord Vishwakarma was told to make three temples in one night. These three temples are identical in design and incorporate a small pond with it. The only difference is the absence of fourth side wall of the pond at Deokund, which Lord Vishwakarma could not complete as the Sunrise occurred. In modern times those three temples are located at Deo, Deokund and Umga in Bihar. Two of these three towns i.e. Deo & Umga have Sun temples and Deokund has Lord Shiv temple (Baba Dudheshwar Nath). However the temple at Deo is the most popular for the celebration of a religious festival called Chhath puja.
    • The Saint Chyawan spent his life in an Aashram (known as Chyawan Aashram) near Deokund village of HASPURA block in this district, and gives his name to a product of the area, called Chyawanprash. It is said that the famous sun tample at Deo was founded by 'Raja Ayel' , a 'Tretayug' , Kingwho is said to be an ascendant of Lord 'Sri Krishna.'
    • The city has produced several historical personalities and many freedom fighters. One of the outstanding national leaders was great Gandhian and the first Deputy Chief Minister cum Finance Minister of Bihar, Bihar Vibhuti Dr. Anugrah Narayan Sinha who was a close aide of Mahatma Gandhi. He even worked with Rajendra Prasad (the first President of India) and led the Gandhian Satyagraha movement in Bihar.
    • It is situated on Grand Trunk Road (Now N.H.No.-02).Before this region came under the control of Moghul Sultanate, it remained under the control of Sen Dynasty and Garhwal (Suryavanshi) rajputs. This place is also known for the bravery of Suryavanshi Garhwal/Garhwali rajputs who fought many battles against mughals and defeated them several times, Later Garhwal/Garhwali rajputs supported Veer Kunwar Singh (king of Jagdishpur) in his many battles with their brave Suryavanshi soldiers.
    • During the regime of Sher Shah, the area became strategically important. It formed a part of the Rohtas Sirkar. The Afghan ruler built the famous Grand Trunk Road (Now N.H.No.-02). After death of Sher Shah; it came under imperial domain of Akbar. The Afghan upsurge in the area was suppressed by Todarmal and the area between Sherghati and Rohtas was brought under the Mughal Empire. But the glimpses of Afghan architecture are still visible in the old buildings of this region. During the regime of Aurangabad his Subedar Daud Khan Kuraishi founded the town Daudnagar
    • Basically Aurangabad was sub-division of Gaya District which was separated on 26.01.1973 as per the govt. notification no. 07/11-2071-72 dated 19.01.1973 as Aurangabad District. Sri K.A.H. Subramanyam was the first District Magistrate of newly created Aurangabad Distict. Till 1991 in Aurangabad District there was only one Sub-division namely Aurangabad Sadar and on date 31.03.1991, another Sub-Division namely Daudnagar was created. The soil of Aurangabad is plane and fertile but some of the region has rocky mountains. Nearest rivers flowing are Sone, Punpun, Auranga, Bataane, Morhar, Adri. It is situated on the Grand Trunk Road. The people of this region primarily speak Magahi. Rice and wheat are the main crops produced here. Aurangabad is located at 24°45′N 84°22′E24.75°N 84.37°E . It has an average elevation of 108 metres (354 feet).

    JUDICIAL HISTORY

    At the district headquarters of Aurangabad, Kazi Mohalla and Diwan Mohalla are situated, where Kabra of Kazi Aliman Diwan and Kazi Sharulla find place. Both of them were authorized Kazi of Auranjeb’s regime. In those days, responsibilities of settling disputes were given to Kazi as per Muslim customs. As per an article written by a Judicial officer in year 1973 the court of Munsif has been here since 1846. There was also a bench of Honorary Magistrates at Daudnagar. So the history of Judiciary Aurangabad is much old. When Aurangabad was made subdivision in year 1865, the munsif was vested with some more power.The Court of sub-judge was inaugurated on 22.06.1973 by the then Hon’ble Chief Justice Mr. Nandlal Untwalia. Sri Narayan Prasad Singh was the first Sub-Judge. Sri Singh was also First Chief Judicial Magistrate of Aurangabad. The Court of District and Sessions Judge was inaugurated on 10.09.1977 by the then Hon’ble Chief Justice Sri Krishna Ballabha Narayan Singh of Patna High Court. Hon’ble Justice Sri Shambhu Prasad Singh had presided over the function in presence of Sri Bhagwad Prasad Jaiswal, the then District and Sessions Judge, Gaya Sri Jai Pati Sinha was the first District and Sessions Judge of this Judgeship.

    AURANGABAD JUDGESHIP AT A GLANCE

    The Aurangabad Judgeship contains two Civil Courts namely Civil Court Aurangabad and Sub- Divisional Court Daudnagar. With the inauguration of the court of District & Sessions judge, Aurangabad on 10-09-1977 by the then Hon’ble the Chief Justice Sri Krishna Ballabha Narayan Singh of Hon’ble Patna High Court, the Judgeship began to function as separate entity. Sri Jai Pati Sinha was the first District & Sessions Judge of this Judgeship. Presently Sri Sampurnanand Tiwary is the District & Sessions Judge of this Judgeship, under whose guidance and able administration the Judgeship is ready to achieve new heights and recognition.

    Buildings of the Judgeship

    Civil Court Aurangabad, It consists of six scattered blocks namely:

    • Central Building (D.J. Building):- This building is situated in the centre of the Court premises and is the oldest one. It has been declared as The Heritage Building and houses the Court and chamber of Learned District & Sessions Judge. The office of the District and Sessions Judge i.e. Administrative/English office, Nazarat and Record Room are situated in this building.
    • Fifteen- Court Building:- This building is situated in the east of the central building. It is a three- storied (G+2) building and is often referred as the A.D.J. Court building. The following twelve courts are currently running in this building: Court of A.D.J-IV, Court of A.D.J-VII, Court of A.D.J-cum-Exclusive Special Judge POCSO Act, Court of Exclusive Special Excise Court-1, Court of Special Exclusive Excise Court-II, Court of A.D.J-X, Court of Sub Judge-VI-cum-A.C.J.M-IV, Court of Sub Judge-VIII-cum-A.C.J.M-VII, Court of Smt. Neha Dayal, J.M-1st Class, Court of Smt. Nidhi Jaiswal, J.M-1st Class-cum-Addl. Munsif, Court of Sri Shobhit Sourav, J.M-1st Class-cum-Addl. Munsif, Court of Sri Om Prakash Narayan Singh, J.M-1st Class-cum-Addl. Munsif and Court of Sri Shad Razaqque, J.M-1st Class-cum-Addl. Munsif. The offices of the few courts along with account office are situated in this building.
    • Double- Storied Building:- This building is situated in the west of the old Central building. This building is often referred as C.J.M. Court building. However, this building has been declared condemned by the Building Construction Department, Aurangabad vide their office letter no. 171/2022 dated 15.02.2022 and hence would be demolished soon
    • Annexe Building:- This building is situated on the west of Double- Storied Building. It houses Copying Department, Forms & Stationary Room, Server Room and office of the court of Smt. Neha Dayal, J.M-1st Class, Aurangabad
    • Fast Track Court (F.T.C). Building:- This building is situated on the north of the Double- Storied building. Currently, this building has two studio based vide-conferencing rooms on its first floor and three court rooms along with chambers on its ground floor. As of now, no court is running in this building. There is also one dispensary on its ground floor that provides medical assistance to the judicial officers, staff members, learned advocates and litigants in case of any medical emergency
    • Eight-Court Building (G+5):- The newly constructed Eight-Court building (G+5) was inaugurated on 27.08.2022 by Hon'ble Mr. Justice Sanjay Karol, The Chief Justice, Patna High Court in the august presence of Hon'ble Mr. Justice Rajiv Roy, Judge, Patna High Court-cum- Inspecting Judge, Aurangabad, Hon'ble Mr. Justice Sandeep Kumar, Judge, Patna High Court and other distinguished dignitaries. The following eight courts are currently running in this building: Principal Judge-Family Court, A.D.J-III-cum-Special Court-MPs/MLAs, Court of A.D.J-1-cum-Special Court-SC/ST/NDPS, Court of A.D.J-II, Court of C.J.M, Court of Sub Judge-1-cum-A.C.J.M-1, Court of S.D.J.M. and Court of Munsif. It has a conference hall on its first floor, office space and library on its fourth floor, record room along with a digital computer room on its fifth floor. This building also has a state of the art facilities such as fire-fighting devices, seperate elevators for Learned Judicial Officers, Learned Advocates and Litigants
    Sub-Divisional Court Daudnagar

    The Sub- Divisional Court Daudnagar was inaugurated by Hon'ble The Chief Justice (acting) Mr. Justice Chandra Mauli Kumar Prasad on 26-04-2008. There is a Double storied Building situated in this Sub- Divisional Court premises. The courts of S.D.J.M, Munsif and two J.M 1st class-cum-Addl. Munsif are running here with their respective offices
